At first glance, these repetitive black and white reproductions captivate with their enigmatic allure. Their origin is telling: though they resemble photographs, they are in fact photocopies. Battling post-traumatic stress and depression, the artist initiated this series in 2019 within the confines of her Paris office.
Exasperated by the daily grind, in a gesture of despair, she decided to press her face against the photocopier. Fascinated by the result, she began a series of experiments, with each photocopy capturing a different facet of her inner turmoil. The sheets emerging from the machine look alike—copies of the same face and copies of the same emotions—just as days at the office are imperfect copies of one another.
Over time, this creative ritual, performed in secret, became her way of resisting the oppressive uniformity of the corporate world and the alienation of urban life. By manipulating shadows, hair, high contrasts, and distorted facial expressions, she creates visual metaphors for her psychophysical state.
By subverting the impersonal medium of photocopying for artistic ends, she transforms a process of mass reproduction into a form of intimate expression. Each A4 sheet becomes a vessel for her cry of despair and her revolt against a stifling routine.
